What does being “healthy”
mean, anyway?
Health can be defined as freedom from
physical and mental disease. Freedom from disease is
relatively easier to assess and is measured using clearly
defined parameters depending on the individual’s
system functions.
What is the
definition of health and wellbeing?
If healthy means being free from disease,
then we have to define what well-being means. The broad
common use of the word “well-being” means how well life
is going for an individual. Therefore health is only
part of well-being albeit an important part. Well-being
in its broadest sense includes good health, physical,
mental, spiritual, wealth within the individual’s wellbeing
context. This allows the individual to set his or her
own parameters.
Still in fullest usage, well-being
can have a communal aspect to it as well.
The United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP) defines well-being as a State of human existence
in which a person's basic needs are adequately met and
satisfied.
